Peaberry Coffee: What It Is and Why Coffee Lovers Seek It Out
· Gigi's Coffee

Peaberry is Gigi's family favorite — a small, round bean with a big following. Here's what it is, why it's special and how to brew it well.
What is a peaberry?
A coffee cherry usually holds two seeds that grow face to face, which is why most coffee beans have one flat side. Occasionally only one seed develops. With the space to itself, it grows small, round and oval — that's a peaberry.
Peaberries appear naturally in a small share of any harvest and have to be sorted out from regular beans, which is why they're sold separately and in smaller quantities.
What does peaberry taste like?
Flavor depends mostly on where the coffee is grown and how it's roasted, just like any coffee. Many coffee lovers find peaberry lots taste a little brighter and more concentrated, and their round shape helps them roll and roast evenly.
How to brew peaberry
Peaberry shines in brewers that highlight clarity: pour-over and drip with a standard grind, or a French press with a coarse grind if you like a fuller body. Because the beans are dense, buying whole bean and grinding right before brewing keeps every bit of flavor.
