How to Choose Your Ideal Coffee: A Simple Guide

Standing in front of a wall of coffee bags can feel overwhelming. The good news: you only need to answer four simple questions to narrow it down. Here's how to find a coffee you'll actually look forward to every morning.

1. Start with flavors you already like

Think about foods and drinks you enjoy. If you love dark chocolate, nuts or caramel, you'll likely enjoy classic, comforting coffees like medium blends. If you reach for berries, citrus or fruity desserts, try a bright single origin. If you like dessert-style treats, a flavored coffee such as hazelnut, French vanilla or turtle gives you that taste without syrups.

2. Pick a roast level

Roast has the biggest effect on taste. Light roasts are bright and fruity, medium roasts are balanced and sweet, and dark roasts are bold, smoky and low in acidity. If you're unsure, medium is the safest place to start — it's the most popular everyday roast for a reason.

3. Match the grind to your brewer

The best coffee can taste flat if the grind is wrong for your brewer. Choose Coarse for French press and cold brew, Standard for drip coffee makers and pour-over, and Espresso for espresso machines and moka pots. If you own a grinder, Whole Bean keeps your coffee fresh the longest. Using a pod machine? Look for single-serve capsules.

4. Think about how you take it

If you drink coffee black, lighter and medium roasts let you taste every subtle note. If you add lots of milk or sugar, a medium-dark or dark roast has the body to shine through. Love iced coffee? Smooth medium roasts and flavored coffees are especially refreshing over ice.

5. Still deciding? Try a sample pack

Sample packs let you taste several coffees side by side before committing to a full bag. It's the easiest way to discover what you love — and a fun gift for a coffee-curious friend.
